USFS Atlanta Club Education Seminar

Atlanta Club Ed seminar

Three officers of the Miami Figure Skating Club joined representatives from other United States Figure Skating clubs from the southeast United States at the USFS 2008 Club Education seminar Saturday, February 23, 2008, in Atlanta. MFSC President Karen Kammer, Treasurer Arin Finocchiaro and Secretary Maria Sidlosca met with their counterparts from other clubs to hear USFS representatives and a facilitator share insights about skating club management.

Attendees learned about all aspects of club governance – including recruiting and training volunteers, developing a strategic plan, team building, fundraising, programming, and other issues – as well as the club’s relationship to U.S. Figure Skating. USFS Director of Skating Programs Susie Wehrli joined facilitator Rose Snyder of Snyder Consulting to lead the day-long program. Other participating clubs included clubs from North Carolina, New York, Alabama, and Georgia.

We have come away from the seminar with fresh ideas, a renewed sense of enthusiasm and new friends.

Please stop by our club bulletin board to see what’s new. Any questions? E-mail me any time at kkammer@mitrani.com. See you on the ice!

New USFS Competitive Test Track
Competitive Test Track

The competitive test track is a new event for all nonqualifying competitions that limits the difficulty of skating elements performed in each level. The test track will line up the test structure requirements with the competition levels, giving skaters a fair playing field to continue competing and testing according to their abilities.
Skaters may choose to participate in either the test track or free skating track but not both during the same nonqualifying competition. The 6.0 judging system will be used for this new track. This will replace the Basic Skills free skating competitive events and direct skaters from the Basic Skills badge levels into the test track or free skating track.

Adding an alternative track for restricted competition will encourage skaters, offer them opportunities for success in a competitive atmosphere while they continue to progress through the test structure, gain credentials for future endeavors and retain membership in U.S. Figure Skating. Competitions that host these events will be offering more opportunities to keep skaters motivated along the pipeline and keep them enthusiastic about their abilities in hopes of retaining skaters who may be discouraged by the high level of technical elements at all levels.
